Peak surcharges start this weekend, and the floor moved
The first 2026 peak surcharges will hit in days, and this year the increase lands on shippers running near their baseline, not just the ones spiking hardest.
Basic residential Ground surcharges are up roughly 23% to 25% over last year. The two major carriers price peak differently underneath, and the mechanics matter more than the headline rates:

Spot truckload rates have moved above contract for the first time since 2021, and leverage is shifting to carriers heading into RFP season.
Truckload spot rates reached about $3.38 per mile with tender rejections at 14.4%, a multi-year high, even as volumes ran 4% to 5% below a year ago (Traffix). That gap points to tight capacity rather than surging demand. Carrier exits and structural capacity leaving the market are driving it, and Uber Freight expects spot rates to run 20% to 25% above prior-year levels through the rest of 2026. Record diesel and a shortage that runs into 2027
Fuel isn’t a spike to wait out. Treat elevated surcharges as a 2027 planning assumption, not a blip.
EIA’s U.S. average on-highway diesel hit $6.529 a gallon for the week of September 21, a record and its third straight weekly climb, up 24.4 cents in a week and $2.78 over a year ago. The tightness looks durable: a global diesel shortage is unlikely to ease before next year, with inventories forecast below the five-year low through most of 2027. Transpacific ocean stays volatile into peak
Rates and reliability are swinging ahead of the National Day rush, so importers should secure space early.
Shanghai to Los Angeles spot rates climbed 5% to about $7,712 per FEU, with roughly 20% of capacity pulled through blank sailings and typhoon activity across Asia driving port congestion and schedule disruption. East Coast rates hold firmer than the West as Panama Canal restrictions persist. Looking to January: FedEx’s 2027 rates
FedEx’s 5.9% is the floor, not your number, and a quiet zone change on February 1 is the one most shippers will miss.
On Ground, every weight from 1 to 20 pounds rises above the 5.9% headline, landing between 6.1% and 6.5% and reaching 6.7% in the far zones.
