ILWU Vote

A Sigh Of Relief For West Coast Shippers After An ILWU Vote?

A vote has been cast to favor recommending a “tentative five year agreement” between the International Longshore and Warehouse Union delegates and waterfront employees to rank and file members. Though the contract could be rejected, the endorsement by the caucus looks promising.

The article states: ”this agreement required 10 months of negotiations — the longest in recent history — but we secured a tentative agreement to maintain good jobs for dockworkers, families and communities from San Diego to Bellingham,” ILWU International President Bob McEllrath said in a statement.

Among other stipulations, the tentative contract includes explanations on how disputes may be handled. Some say the net result may be less favorable for the Union since it will involve a 3 person panel, including one neutral arbitrator. In the past just one arbitrator was involved for grievance procedures. Now, each group will have an arbitrator; plus one neutral arbitrator will be involved.
