UPS Takes Major Step Toward Using “Greener” Renewable Fuels In Its Operations

Recently UPS has made agreements with three leading suppliers of renewable fuels (Renewable Energy Group (REG), Neste, and Solazyme) to take steps toward meeting the companies’ objectives for alternative fuel utilization. UPS announced that these agreements have led to a “15-fold increase over prior contracts” resulting in UPS’ getting access to up to 46 million gallons of renewable fuels in the next three years. This will make UPS one of the largest renewable fuel users in the world.

The company is well aware of the carbon emissions that occur on its behalf, and it is taking steps to reduce these emissions. UPS Senior Vice President, Global Engineering and Sustainability Mark Wallace, states “advanced alternative fuels like renewable diesel are an important part of our strategy to reduce the carbon emissions impact of our fleet.”

Is renewable fuel the next big thing in the shipping ad logistics industry? Will other companies follow UPS ‘ bold moves toward reducing carbon emissions?
