Amazon has received another big boost in its constant drive to set the stage for the “new normal” in package delivery services. The Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA), recently approved Amazon’s request to utilize drones to delivery packages to Amazon’s customers.
While these plans have been in the works for some time, it is now a reality and Amazon will begin testing drones as a way to improve two day delivery service down to one day. In fact, deliveries could happen within minutes of an Amazon customer hitting the “Buy” button on Amazon’s Marketplace website.
So what does this mean for Amazon and their customers, as well as for the FAA?
First, the FAA will be developing a new air-traffic system to track low altitude drone flights. They will also need to implement rules to minimize the risk of drone on drone accidents as well as the potential for drones hitting other aircraft or jeopardizing human activity on the ground.
Remember, UPS has previously received approval from the FAA for Drone flights and they have been in testing for quite a while now.
For Amazon, the initial deliveries will involve packages that weigh less than 5 pounds. It’s hard to imagine that the 5-pound weight limit would be increased substantially.
To all of those who said “this will never happen” it just did.
